The migration assessor for engineers. Off-Accord degrees prove competency by writing a three-Career-Episode Competency Demonstration Report instead.
Engineers Australia is the designated assessing authority for engineering migration. It sorts every applicant into one of four occupational categories (Professional Engineer, Engineering Technologist, Engineering Associate, or Engineering Manager) and runs the Migration Skills Assessment across five pathways: an Australian-accredited engineering degree, a degree from a Washington Accord, Sydney Accord, or Dublin Accord signatory country, or the Competency Demonstration Report for everyone else. The CDR is what makes EA distinctive: a written portfolio proving engineering competency, not just a qualification check.
If your engineering degree is not Australian-accredited and not from a Washington, Sydney, or Dublin Accord signatory institution, the CDR pathway is the only route. It needs three Career Episodes (each a distinct project or work period in your engineering career), a Summary Statement that maps each Episode to EA's Stage 1 Engineering Competencies, and a Continuing Professional Development list. Most applicants spend months writing it. EA runs plagiarism checks across every CDR ever lodged, so recycled or AI-generated text is grounds for refusal.
Engineers Australia publishes 15 weeks as the typical time for an MSA application to be assigned to an assessor. That is not 15 weeks to outcome. After assignment, the assessor reviews documents and may request more information before issuing the result. Plan in months, not weeks, from lodgement to outcome letter.
Unlike VETASSESS or AITSL, Engineers Australia requires English evidence as part of the MSA itself. The published floor is IELTS Academic 6.0 in each of reading, writing, listening, and speaking, or equivalent OET, PTE Academic, or TOEFL iBT scores. Exemptions exist for graduates of qualifications taught entirely in English in certain countries, but they are narrow and decided by EA case by case.
EA assesses into one of four categories: Professional Engineer (bachelor-level engineering qualification), Engineering Technologist (advanced diploma or bachelor-level engineering technology), Engineering Associate (associate degree or diploma engineering), and Engineering Manager (engineering plus management experience). The category drives the ANZSCO code on the outcome letter and which visas list that code. A Mechanical Engineering Technology graduate working as a "Mechanical Engineer" still gets assessed as a Technologist.
Fast-track at $350 ex GST jumps the application to the front of the queue for assignment. The assessment itself still depends on document quality and any back-and-forth with the assessor. If the CDR is light on competency mapping or employment evidence is thin, fast-track does not fix that. Useful when documents are clean and a visa-invitation window is closing.
